The lacrimal system includes all of the structural elements involved in the production and drainage of the tear film. Tears are primarily produced by the lacrimal glands and excreted onto the ocular surface via the lacrimal ducts. Tears then drain from the ocular surface through the puncta, travel through the canaliculi, reaching the lacrimal sac, and finally, descend through nasolacrimal duct.

The Lacrimal Gland

The main lacrimal gland is responsible for produing the bulk of tear film. It is an exocrine gland that secretes serous fluid a is It sits anterior and temporal to the orbit within the lacrimal fossa of the frontal bone.
